E-BOOK DESCRIPTION
During the first phase of the project, between January 2022 and December 2022, they carried out research work that contributed to the identification of relevant approaches, applications, methodologies and fields of action relevant to the further development of the training programme.
Although there were some technical (engineering) publications on the subject, this work had not yet been done at an accessible level or for training purposes.
This approach seems the right one from the point of view of the target audience for the eBook: potentially interested VET students, other training centres, companies that can start applying remote maintenance techniques, employment services that have a need for professionals in this field, etc.
This eBook is divided into four chapters, according to the modules in the training programme:
A brief introduction to the definition of remote maintenance is given and relevant enabling technologies are described through a short literature review. As an integral part of this chapter, the cumulative results of the remote maintenance awareness survey conducted in Austria, Italy, Ireland and Spain are presented and discussed, as well as an overview of possible qualification gaps.
It analyses the need for a remote connection, the negative consequences of not doing so and identifies and describes the main techniques of secure remote connection, which has subsequently been the subject of theoretical and practical development in the training programme. It also points out the most relevant fields of action in the field of industrial cybersecurity and presents real success stories
This chapter introduces the concept of Industry 4.0 and its relationship to the automation frameworks most commonly used in industry today. It examines current approaches to data collection in the factory environment and their intersection with the application spaces of Industry 4.0 and IIOT. A review of approaches to getting data from the factory environment to the cloud is presented and, from there, an approach using MQTT as the data communication interface is highlighted as the most suitable.
The aim of this article is to define the term “Maintenance 4.0” or remote maintenance, within the broader debate on Industry 4.0 (or fourth industrial revolution), a term that underlies the radical paradigm shift that the manufacturing sector has faced in recent years, thanks to the spread of digital technologies and their integration into the production chain. This revolution has had an impact firstly on companies, making them “smart”, and secondly on operational processes.
This chapter is closely related to cybersecurity. Updating functionalities is an important element in the life cycle of industrial control software. Remote updating of programs and functionalities of industrial control systems makes it possible to update and improve the performance of industrial installations in a very cost and resource-efficient way.
The conclusions contain real-life testimonials from companies that have benefited from the implementation of these measures and from the remote maintenance staff of these companies.
The main objective of this project outcome is to necessarily provide essential information for the design and creation of training courses and to raise awareness of the importance of remote maintenance as part of the digital transformation.
